Young children collect firewood at Doro refugee camp. Women and girls regularly walk long distances, sometimes alone, at least once a day to collect firewood for cooking and to sell. The threat of physical harm or rape from soldiers and other men in host communities while collecting firewood outside the camps is one of their top concerns.

Ever get the feeling that you might be in the process of being watched? If so, you’ll probably have an idea of what photographer Arne Svenson’s subjects in his latest project, “The Neighbors” are feeling. Svenson blurs the lines of photographic voyeurism in this series, using his camera to focus on one building directly across from his home in Tribeca in New York City.

““New Yorkers are masters of being both the observer and the observed. We live so densely packed together that contact is inevitable—even our homes are stacked facing each other. I have found this symbiotic relationship between the looker and the observed only here—we understand that privacy is fluid and that glass truly is transparent.”

All of these young people face very different body image issues — some of them are recovering from eating disorders or suffering from body dysmorphic disorder, while others have had cosmetic surgery, or are considering it. Meanwhile, others are transitioning genders or may be going through other Photographer Michelle Sank captures the pressure young people feel from media and pop culture to achieve a specific physical standard in her series, “In My Skin.”

The Atlas Group

The Atlas Group is a project established in 1999 to research and document the contemporary history of Lebanon. One of their aims with this project is to locate, preserve, study, and produce audio, visual, literary and other artifacts that shed light on the contemporary history of Lebanon.

They have produced and found several documents including notebooks, films, videotapes, photographs and other objects. Moreover, they organized these works in an archive, The Atlas Group Archive. The project’s public forms include mixed-media installations, single channel screenings, visual and literary essays, and lectures/performances.
